The outdoor drama Blue Jacket in Xenia, Ohio – closed
When did they close Blue Jacket?
It was closed almost two years ago.
why did it close?
Money problems and recently uncovered historical evidence that Blue Jacket was in reality a Shawnee, not a white man as the play stated, so the play was historically incorrect.
Why can’t they still have the play even though Blue jacket was
a Shawnee native American?
I suspect it has more to do with finances that with Blue Jacket’s heritage. Thank you for your comment. It reminded me I have not checked into what is happening with the location of the play since it closed.
I was with a group who toured the amphitheater with county officials and a Columbus architect this last February. The facility has been idle since the last show closed several years ago. Raccoon have done extensive damage to the tower atop of which sits the stage management booth. The last show was actually a Halloween haunted event called Psycho Path. The event remains unstruck, with props and sets scattered and decaying throughout the backstage structures which once did double duty as set pieces. It was tax issues related to the yearly Psycho Path, the gift shop, and other non-mission related activities which finally sunk the BJ ship. Even so, it was in poor shape financially well before the IRS got involved. The site (theater and land) now belongs to Greene County and is administered by their parks and rec dept.
Thank you for the update.
