Replica of Ohio’s electric chair at Mansfield Reformatory
This electric chair replica which is used to represent the device used in the Ohio State Prison System looks very authentic.I live in Illinois, and my states prison system no longer uses electrocution to carry out the death penalty. But our correctional institution in Menard State Prison in Chester,Illinois still has the states electric chair.Although it is no longer operational or in use since Illinois outmoded electocution in favor of lethal injection.I would suppose Menard will likely keep the old chair and use just its very presence to make Menards inmates lives a little more uncomfortable.Much of the prisons inmate population was actually granted access to the death row facility to see this 500 pound killer seat! Some iron willed prisoners really sat in it!
Wow! I know the chair at Statevilleville is still there too, I have no idea about the one at the Cook County Jail. I’ve seen pics of all 3 but all are old and black & white. I’d like to see some current color pics of Illinois chairs. As for this one, it had me fooled, I thought it was the original Ohio chair but after seeing close ups of both, the headpiece on this one is smaller and some of the woodstains are different. Damn good job they did on making it, it fooled me!
Sorry, As far as I know we are no relation.
Immediately following the electrocution of inmate James Dukes in 1962, the chair at Cook County Jail was taken out of service and to this day no one knows or is willing to tell what happened to it, except maybe former Warden Jack Johnson if he is still living.
Sounds like a real mystery. The one on display in Mansfield is just a replica and no one ever died in this chair.
Since my last post I have found that the Cook County Jail Electric Chair is being stored in the basement of Statesville Prison along with it’s weird-looking headpiece that covered the condemned’s entired head and contained the head electrode. Use your search engine and type “Cook County Jail’s Electric Chair” and look for “All In A Days Work”, for results containing photos.
Looking to buy a real electric chair for a display inside a museum.
I am looking to purchase an original or a very very good quality replica electric for a museum in northwest Tennesee. Can anyone out
there help me find one of these? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Hugh Wade Sept. 2, 2014
Here is the photo of the Statesville (left) and Cook County Jail electric chairs in storage at Statesville.
The chair used at Menard in Illinois is on display at a museum in Randolph County, across the street from the Randolph County Courthouse.
Americans seen to have a fascination with killing machines. I know of several electric chairs on display, such as at the former West Virginia State Prison in Moundsville, WVA where not only the electric chair is a tourist attraction but also the gallows they once used for hangings.
