Lighting The Mountain For 25 Years

This is the 25th anniversary of the Festival of Lights at Ogelbay Park in Wheeling, West Virginia.

The light show is one of the biggest and the best in the Midwest and has been every year since 1984 when it was first started as a way to boost tourism during the holiday season.

The mountain-top resort was once the summer home of the Ogelbay Family of Cleveland who left their mansion and thousands of mountain top acres to the city of Wheeling.  Today it is a park offering a lodge, cabins, riding trails, West Virginia’s only zoo as well as tennis courts, a museum and a host of other fun things to do.

The light display has doubled in size since its inception and now covers over three hundred acres along a six mile drive.  Millions of lights illuminate the displays along the mountain roads.

The Festival of lights runs through January 3, 2010.  Although there is not a formal charge you do pass through a gate and a per car donation is requested at which time you receive a pass that allows your car to travel the resort during the entire festival without further cost.
