Some Fun Family Things To Do In Autumn

Autumn in Ohio.  I have always thought of it as the Buckeye States most beautiful season.  A perfect time to take some Ohio Road Trips.

This year, as part of the Covered Bridge Festival in Ashtabula County,  they are unveiling the world’s shortest covered bridge, just eighteen feet long.  It will be located over Cowles Creek on West Liberty Street in Geneva and become the eighteenth covered bridge in the county.  The bridge is being built piece by piece at a local vocational school and will be assembled on the West Liberty Street location just prior to the festival opening.

The Covered Bridge Festival in Ashtabula County  is on October 9th and 10th.  The festival is held at the fairgrounds in Jefferson, the county seat of Ashtabula County.  You can visit their website at http://www.coveredbridgefestival.org or call the festival office at 440-576-3769.

A leisurely and unique way to see some beautiful fall leaves is aboard the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway.  Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in October.  The train makes a slow trip over 22 miles of the Hocking Valley to Logan, Ohio and back to the starting point in Nelsonville.  Along the way you not only see fall color in the Appalachian foothills  but also historic canal locks, with a stop at a recreated pioneer village, Robbins Crossing. You will need reservations for these trips.  Call 800-967-7834 or visit their website, http://www.hvsry.org.  The railway office is at 33 East Canal Street, Nelsonville, Ohio.

….You can read the rest of this story about the Pumpkin Festival, the Sauerkraut Festival and even the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival in the Saturday, September 22nd edition of the Cleveland Plain Dealer or at their website at http://www.cleveland.com

  1. Although I’m sad that I won’t be able to make it to the Sauerkraut Festival, I’ll be sure to attend the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival in in Coshocton and Circleville’s Pumpkin Show.

    Thanks for posting!

In Nelsonville, there’s also an Ohio Smoked Meat & Barbeque Festival ( http://www.nelsonvillefd.org/ohiobbq.htm ) – something to enjoy before or after the train ride.

    Happy Autumn!

  2. This was a great event. Ohio is a beautiful state and I agree that fall is the best time of the year. There is just some much to see when the Colors Start to change.
